How to Choose Shoes for Osteoarthritis

Choosing shoes can be hard when living with osteoarthritis. By learning to choose the right shoes, you will be able to get some relief.

Steps

    1
Find a shoe store with a wide range of options. More options means better chances for finding comfortable, supportive shoes.

    2
As soon as you go in, ask employees for help. Explain that you have osteoarthritis and are looking for shoes that will provide comfort and support.

    3
Try to avoid very high heels, as these can cause stress on your ankles, knees, and hips. Instead, opt for flat shoes or shoes with wedges.

    4
Make sure you find shoes with arches. Shoes with no arches can worsen osteoarthritis.

    5
Pick shoes with a sturdy structure. Osteoarthritis can increase the risk of falls, but sturdy shoes can lower your chances.

    6
Try to go for shoes with a cushioned surface for your feet. This will lessen impact on your joints.

    7
If you absolutely must buy high heels, try to find cushioned arches or add Dr. Scholl's to your shoes. These will also lessen impact on your joints.

    8
Purchase the shoes only if you feel completely comfortable after walking around the store.

Tips

Remain patient. The process may take longer than you first expected.
It may depend on the joints your arthritis affects.
Talk to your doctor about the best shoes for you.
