Calorimeters are used to measure potential energy. A calorie is the energy it takes to heat a mL of water 1 degree C. These calories are not the ones used in food, those are Calories or kcal (1000 normal calories)
Steps
1
Take a large 16oz aluminum can with one end removed (paint or coffee works well) and cut a medium sized hole in one side. The hole should be cut out of the bottom 2-3 inches and be about 2 inches wide, or larger if necessary. Put the can on a table, with aluminum foil under it. (Shiny side up)
2
Next, cut 4 triangular holes in the top of the can around the edges, and then cut another 4 holes on the sides of the can, on the top edge.
3
Then you are going to need something to hold water (glass only) such as a flask or a vase that is of proper size. Then fill it with 100 ml of water (you will need a graduated cylinder for this)
4
Next, take a large piece of cork, and put a paper clip into it. This is the stand for the food.
5
Measure the mass of the food with a balance.
6
Stick the food onto the paper clip. You can bend the paper clip to hold the food on too.
7
Insert a thermometer (not digital) into the water above the can. Record the reading.
8
Light the food with a match or lighter.
9
Record the temperature differences at 30-second intervals while it burns. Once it stops burning, keep recording until the water temperature stops dropping again.
10
Measure the mass again, and record the change to see how much burned.
11
Repeat as much as necessary.
12
After tests, to determine Kcal count, Multiply increase in water temperature by 100, which is the amount of water used. This is the calorie amount. To get to Kcal, divide by 1000.
Tips
You want the holes to be big enough where heat escapes, but not so big where all the heat is lost.
Foods that work best include nuts, Cheerios, sugary foods (fun to watch as it really lights the can up) and sweet corn kernels. Breads and grains wont have as much effect, along with most vegetables.
Warnings
The can can get EXTREMELY hot after lots of use. Don't burn yourself.
Fire is dangerous.
